Segway
(PT) Questions
What is a Segway?
The Segway Human Transporter (HT) is a 2 wheeled, self-balancing,
battery-powered transportation device able to turn in place and
designed for one person. You ride the Segway by standing on its
platform between the two wheels. The Segway debuted in 2001 by its
inventor Dean Kamen.
How does the Segway work?
The Segway has an on-board computer that sends and receives
information from 5 gyroscopes 100 times per second. This keeps the Segway in balance. When
you lean forward, the Segway moves forward. When you lean back, the
Segway slows down and stops or goes backwards. A LeanSteer® handlebar
column (YOKE) allow turning of the Segway.
How fast and far can a Segway PT go?
A Segway can go up to the speed of 12.5 mph and a distance of 24 miles
depending on terrain.
What are the Segway
weight limits and why?
The i2 Segway has a load restriction weight of 100 to 260 pounds. If
the rider is below the minimum 100 pound weight limit, the Segway
rider may not be able to shift his/her weight far enough to safely
control the Segway. The maximum 260 pound weight limit is to protect
the structural integrity of the Segway.
Can I buy a Segway from Dallas Segway Tours?
We do not sell new Segway units. If you are interested in a new Segway,
please visit
www.TexasSegway.com or
www.Segway.com. However, from time to
time as our fleet of Segway units are replaced, will do occasionally have
a used Segway unit for sale.

Tour Questions
and Restrictions
Do I need a Reservation?
YES. Tours can quickly book out. To ensure a Segway to
ride, a reservation IS required. A reservationists will require a
credit card to hold your spot. (See
Cancellation Policy questions)
Is the Segway difficult to ride?
Not at all. Most people become confident Gliders within 5
to 10 minutes. If you can walk upright, you should be able to ride a Segway.
However, our orientation and training sessions are required at the start of every
tour whether you've ridden before or not.
Is there a minimum and maximum age requirement?
Minimum Age - 14:
Insurance Companies dictate most everything in today's world, and
Segway Tours are no exception! Currently our Insurance requires a
rider to be at least 14 years of age (NO EXCEPTIONS).
Maximum Age - 70+:
Through years of experience in the Segway touring industry it
has been noted that most riders in their 70's and older have a
difficult time on the Segway.
WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND people of this age group consider
their activity level, stamina, and sense of balance before
considering a Segway tour. Falls can occur and usually a fall
within this age group is much more serious than thoughts in younger age
groups. Unfortunately if you do reserve a tour and cannot or
decide not to ride, you will be charged the full price of
your Segway reservation. If your intention is to show your
Grandparents a fun time, it's probably not going to
be as fun for them as you think!
Can I fall off a Segway?
It does happen! Just as riding a bicycle, rollerblading,
skateboarding, you must do
it with care and always be focused on your surroundings. Running into a
parked car, a sign, or slightly scraping your tire against a curb or
bush will cause you to fall.
Can I ride pregnant?
Be real here. All though the chance of falling is
slim,
why take the risk. NO! NO! NO!
How long do the tours last?
This depends on the
tour selected. Our Segway experiences
range
from 1 to 1.5 hours in duration and cover 3.5 to 4.5 miles. This time
includes orientation, training, and tour. Your actual tour time may
vary slightly depending on the size of the group, automobile traffic, pedestrian traffic,
and weather conditions.
What should I wear?
Always dress for the weather. Always wear comfortable shoes (tennis
shoes are the most comfortable shoe to wear, we DO NOT allow flip
flops or high heels). You are welcome to use your own helmet as
long as it meets the CPSC standard.
Where do we meet?
Riders must sign in at the SpringHill Suites Marriott Hotel
located in the
Dallas West End Historic District. (You may see Segway units parked
around the corner from the hotel but this is not where we
meet.)
See our Contact Information Page.
What time should I arrive?
You and/or your group need to arrive no later than 20 minutes before
your scheduled tour.
When will my photos be posted?
Photos are generally accessible through this website in 1 to 2 days
after your tour.
